Spicy Cajun Hot Chocolate – Bold & Warming Drink

  • Author: Linda

Description

This Spicy Cajun Hot Chocolate brings together rich chocolate with a kick of Cajun-style heat — perfect for a cozy, indulgent drink with a spicy twist.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (about 500 ml) milk (dairy or plant-based)

  • 34 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (or your favorite chocolate)

  • 23 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • ¼ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • A pinch of salt

  • (Optional) A small pinch of nutmeg or allspice for more depth

  • (Optional) Whipped cream or marshmallows for topping

Instructions

  • Heat the Milk
In a medium saucepan, warm the milk over medium heat until it’s hot but not boiling.

  • Mix the Dry Ingredients
While the milk is heating, combine cocoa powder, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl or measuring cup.

  • Combine & Whisk
Gradually whisk the dry mixture into the hot milk. Keep whisking until everything is well dissolved and the mixture is smooth.

  • Add Flavor
Stir in the vanilla extract. If you’re using nutmeg or allspice, add it now. Taste and adjust the spice level (add more cayenne if you want more heat).

  • Simmer Slightly
Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer gently for 1–2 minutes, stirring occasionally, so the flavors meld.

  • Serve
Pour into mugs. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if you like.

Notes

  • Start with a small amount of cayenne — you can always add more later if it’s not spicy enough.

  • Use a whisk to mix so the cocoa powder doesn’t clump.

  • Don’t boil the milk; simmering is enough to bring out the flavors without burning.

  • If you want a richer drink, you can use half milk and half cream.
