This comforting Salisbury steak is tender, flavorful, and simmered in a rich onion-brown gravy. It’s an easy, budget-friendly dinner that feels hearty and homemade. Perfect for weeknights, meal prep, or serving with mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
For the Steaks

1 lb ground beef

1 large egg
-
⅓ cup breadcrumbs

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp ketchup
-
½ tsp onion powder
-
½ tsp garlic powder
-
Salt & black pepper, to taste

1 tbsp oil (for browning)
For the Gravy

2 tbsp butter
-
1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
½ tsp dried thyme (optional)

Salt & pepper, to taste
Instructions

Make the Steak Patties
Combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Mix gently and shape into 4–5 oval patties. -
Brown the Patties
Heat oil in a large skillet.
Brown the patties on both sides (they don’t need to cook through yet).
Remove and set aside. -
Cook the Onions
In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions.
Cook until soft and lightly golden. -
Build the Gravy
Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking.
Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
Simmer until slightly thickened. -
Simmer Everything Together
Add the patties back to the skillet.
Spoon gravy over the top and cover.
Simmer on low for 10–15 minutes, until the steaks are cooked through and the gravy is thick. -
Serve
Spoon extra gravy over the steaks and serve warm over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
