Equipment

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • ½ cup tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices bread white, whole wheat, or preferred
  • 1 to 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese or cheese blend
  • Butter for spreading on bread optional

Instructions
 

  • Cook ground beef with onion and garlic in a skillet over medium heat until beef is browned and onions are soft.
  • Add tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper; simmer 5 to 7 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F or set broiler.
  • Optionally, lightly butter bread slices and arrange on a baking sheet.
  • Spoon Sloppy Joe mixture evenly over each slice of bread.
  • Top each slice generously with shredded cheese.
  • Bake or broil for 5 to 7 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly, watching closely to avoid burning.
  • Serve warm; optionally garnish with chopped parsley or green onions.

Notes

  • Use mozzarella or pepper jack cheese for flavor variation.
  • Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Mix in diced bell peppers, corn, or mushrooms to the beef.
