- 14 oz crab meat fresh or canned, picked over
- ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
- ¼ cup finely chopped onion or green onion
- 2 to 3 garlic cloves minced
- 2 to 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 large egg lightly beaten
- 1 to 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard or Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- ½ to 1 cup additional panko or breadcrumbs for coating
- Vegetable or canola oil for frying
- Optional: lemon wedges tartar sauce, chopped parsley for garnish
In a large bowl, gently combine crab meat, ½ cup panko, chopped onion, garlic, mayonnaise, beaten egg, and Dijon mustard or Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
Shape the mixture into small bite-sized balls or patties, then press each into the remaining panko or breadcrumbs to coat evenly.
Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat to about ½ inch depth until shimmering.
Fry the crab bites in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides, about 2 to 3 minutes per side.
Remove bites with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Serve warm, garnished with lemon wedges, tartar sauce, or parsley as desired.
- Do not overmix the crab mixture for tender texture.
- Add Old Bay seasoning, paprika, or cayenne for extra flavor.
- Pair with tartar sauce, spicy aioli, or lemon garlic yogurt.
- Perfect for parties or as part of a seafood platter.
