1 bowl
1 skillet or grill pan
- 1.1 –1.3 lb chicken thighs or breasts cut into bite-sized pieces or strips
- 2 –3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 –3 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 –3 tbsp honey or brown sugar
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 –2 garlic cloves minced
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger optional
- ½ tsp Chinese five-spice powder optional
- Sesame seeds for garnish
- Sliced green onions for garnish
In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey or brown sugar, vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger if used, and Chinese five-spice powder.
Add the chicken pieces to the marinade and toss to coat evenly. Let the chicken marinate for at least 20 to 30 minutes or longer in the refrigerator for deeper flavor.
Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and add the marinated chicken, reserving the remaining marinade.
Cook the chicken until browned and cooked through, about 6 to 8 minutes.
Pour the reserved marinade into the pan and simmer for a few minutes until it thickens and becomes glossy, coating the chicken.
Transfer the glazed chicken to a serving plate and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve warm with steamed rice, noodles, or vegetables.
- Adjust sweetness by varying honey or sugar to taste.
- Add chili flakes or sriracha for a spicy kick.
- For extra char, finish under broiler 1–2 minutes.
- Pairs well with stir-fried greens or crunchy Asian slaw.
