Equipment

  • 1 large skillet
  • 1 baking dish
  • 1 oven

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1-2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 2-3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1-2 tbsp brown sugar optional
  • 1 tsp Dijon or yellow mustard
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup diced bell peppers optional
  • 4-5 cups mashed potatoes homemade or store-bought
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Shredded cheese for topping optional

Instructions

  • Cook ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat until beef is browned and onions are softened, breaking up the meat as it cooks.
  • Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Stir in tomato sauce or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar (if using), mustard, salt, and pepper. Add diced bell peppers if desired.
  • Simmer the mixture for 5 to 8 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 °F (180 °C).
  • Spread the beef mixture evenly in a baking dish.
  • Spoon mashed potatoes over the beef mixture, spreading into an even layer.
  • Dot the potatoes with butter and sprinkle shredded cheese on top if desired.
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the topping is heated through and lightly golden.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Use creamy, well-seasoned mashed potatoes for best results.
  • Add hot sauce or paprika to the sauce for extra flavor.
  • Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese enriches the topping.
  • Serve with steamed vegetables or a crisp salad.
