Equipment

  • 1 slow cooker
  • 1 mixing bowl for slurry if using flour/cornstarch
  • 1 whisk to mix gravy slurry

Ingredients

  • 4 bone-in or boneless chicken pieces thighs, breasts, or mixed
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 small onion sliced
  • 2 to 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 packet about 1 ounce gravy mix OR 2 to 3 tablespoons flour or cornstarch for thickening
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons butter or oil
  • Optional: fresh herbs thyme, rosemary, parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Season the chicken pieces on all sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Place the sliced onion and minced garlic in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Nestle the seasoned chicken on top of the onions and garlic.
  • Pour the chicken broth around the chicken. If using dry gravy mix, sprinkle it evenly over the top.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6 to 7 hours or high for 3 to 4 hours until chicken is tender and fully cooked.
  • Remove the chicken and keep warm. For flour or cornstarch gravy, mix it with cold water to form a slurry.
  • Whisk the slurry into the slow cooker juices. Cook on high for 10 to 15 minutes to thicken the gravy.
  • Spoon gravy over the chicken and garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

  • Adjust flour or cornstarch to get desired gravy thickness.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce or cream for richer flavor.
  • Include carrots and potatoes in slow cooker for a complete meal.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated up to 3 days.
